This is my response to the email I received the previous day.
I will have to respond to your message and object. The term political correctness is a term invented by ultra right wing factions to discredit a diversity-respecting approach to politics and to life in general, and to muzzle criticism by others on the expression of their fundamentalist opinions.
Reality check: in Canada, the population is expected to be majority mixed-race and the Caucasians (Anglo-Saxon) will be a minority within two generations from today. As well, first generation/foreign born immigrants will make up a vast section of the population, almost a third! Statistics Canada: By 2031, between 25% and 28% of the population could be foreign-born. This would surpass the proportion of 22% observed between 1911 and 1931, the highest during the twentieth century. About 55% of this population would be born in Asia.
A thought to be considered when you send this kind of message around: what will your grandchildren be, biased, tolerant, multi cultural?
I think we should celebrate all holidays regardless of what religion: Chanukah (Jewish all over the world), El Eid (Islam), Diwali (Sikh), Inti Raymi (Mexico, Incas), Bhodi day (Bhuddist), Samhain (Celtic),Modranect (Saxon), Pansha Ganapati (Hindu), Kwanzaa (pan African) and so on….
By the way, Jesus is also a prophet in the eyes of The Islam religion and the Jewish also recognize him as a special person.
I would not want to feed the people within the Christian-Judeo based belief system that that believe Jesus was not actually a virgin-born son of God, although indeed a very special, historic person.
All early peoples celebrated a fest of light around the winter solstice, to chase away the dark spirits and to remind the gods to send us light and they believed their efforts helped to bring that about. Let’s celebrate our diverse backgrounds. Merry Christmas to you.
